Open Device Manager and double-click on the unknown network adapter to open Properties for it, then click the Details tab. Choose Hardware Ids in the Property drop down menu. You should see a text string in the box below, similar to PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_75491462&REV_02.

This string gives information about the vendor (10EC in the example) and device (8186 in the example) for the network adapter. Then go to http://www.pcidatabase.com and search for the vendor and device. Finally, go to the vendor's website and locate the appropriate driver.

I should mention the information on that site isn't always 100% accurate, but is for the most part.

Follow the steps in post #2 for the network adapter.

If there are other unknown devices in the Device Manager with a question mark or exclamation mark, do the same thing.

Depending on what devices are in that computer, a clean install of Windows XP may not install a driver for one or more or all of them.
