Is anyone else out there using a Netgear MA111 USB wireless adapter on a Windows 98 (SE) sytem?

I got the MA111 working fine - good signal strength etc., but I still can't get to the internet???

I'm using a Belkin 54g wireless router which the SAME 98 machine used to connect to via ethernet FINE, and got the internet fine.

I don't know what else I need to set up to get this working?

The 111 is a b adapter, is the Belkin set to b/g, is it capable of this?

You may be having a Win98 problem and not a wireless card problem.

The Router is chucking out 54g, as you say, the card is listening for b.

I read on either the Netgear or Belkin site that a b card will talk to a g router but not vice versa - so I thought I was OK. The little Netgear icon goes green, so it is talking to it. Just no internet!

Yes, your b adaptor should function with a b/g router (at the limitation of the b protocol data rate).

I would think it more likely you have have incompatiblity between Netgear and Belkin kit than a Win98 problem given Netgear provide drivers for Win98 (which I assume you have installed and are using).

The green icon does appear to indicate you have wireless connectivity OK.

The adaptor is set to look for the correct SSID (of the router)?
The adaptor is set to infrastructure mode?
Is encryption off/disabled (in both router and adaptor)? Or if on, that the keys on the adaptor match the router.

What IP is you PC getting from the router (using winipcfg); post the details.

SSID is the same, using infrastructure mode, and 128-bit encryp with keyphrase is correect.

winipcfg shows 2 adapters - my old ethernet 10/100 card - with 192.168.2.3 etc - looks fine, but there is anoter called PPP with IP 0.0.0.0 - don't know what that means - but no sign of a Netgear adapter in there anyway??

I found something on the netgear site which helped me with the drivers and I managed to get the drivers re-installed and now winipcfg does show Nthe NETGEAR adapter - and it does have the right addresses on it.

I can also now ping my router, and ping my wireless laptop from the 98 box using the MA111.

A big step forward but I still cannot get any pages up on IE?

What could be left to do?

That's interesting. When I type in 192.168.2.1 in the address line I get "IE has encountered an error and needs to close" popup msg.
All other addresses (e.g. www.ibm.com) gives me "The page Cannot be displayed" msg.

Just to bring this thread to a close, I finally got this working with help from Bob! in the Win 98 thread...

Bob Cerelli said:
You might look at the DNS entries that the router is using. The set the computer to use those addresses.

It is also possible that the winsock2 registry entries are corrupted.

To Remove the existing winsock2 registry entries (regardless of the OS) run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/xp_del_winsock.reg

To add Win98 clean entries back in again, run:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/reg/win98_winsock.reg
This worked a treat, and all my wireless troubles are over! :)
