Hi,
I recently got an old laptop with NeoMagic 256AV sound card.
It had 95 and ran all i wanted except multi-monitor support.
I therefore decided to upgrade to 98, and did so. I did a backup of the drivers, and all the files I wanted to keep. I started the laptop up, and was greeted by 'the microsoft sound'. But then when I went to play an audio CD, it came up with the 'Sound card in use' error.
This has happened after re-installing the drivers countless times,
installing a generic driver 5 times,
downloading the drivers off of the internet twice,
from different locations, and installing them countless times. I also re-installed windows at least 5 times!
Are there any drivers that will allow me to use the computer without the sound cutting out? When I used the microsoft generic driver, it installed, after forcing windows to accept it, and worked... until I tried starting it up the other day, so I tried re-installing the old drivers, no sound... back to the generic driver... now no sound...
Does anyone know what is wrong? Why does it work in 95 but not 98?
Is my hardware faulty?
