After downloading windows 8 and updating to 8.1, my graphics card seemed to have gotten worst or maybe its something else.

I'm using a NVIDI GT 640M on windows 8.1

and the games and programs I used before this, are now running slower and in worst fps.

PLEASE HELP!

Hi Tater1994,

You said you "downloaded Windows 8 and then 8.1".

What was on the computer originally? What is the make and model of computer we are working on?

--------------------------------------------------

Have you downloaded the latest drivers for your NVIDIA GT 640M video card?

You can download them here.

--------------------------------------------------

That graphics card isn't terribly powerful though, I wouldn't expect spectacular results (depending on the gameplay).

See its benchmarks here.

--------------------------------------------------

If you are interested, the site Can U Run It? analyzes your computer's hardware and determines if you can run a selected game.

It's very useful for anyone who games on their PC.

I got the laptop about a year and a half ago, and it came with windows 8. Was before 8.1 one came out.

Then I upgraded to 8.1 and that's when it began. I can hardly run games on low quality now, when before i upgraded i was running things like medium -> high

I just swept all the drivers off my laptop a few minutes ago, and re downloaded the NVIDIA

I don't need to run things on ultra, im just trying to play simple games on medium to high.... like when i first got my laptop... And the update to 8.1 might have no contribution to this issue what so ever...
I'm not sure how or why an upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 would cause a loss of performance in your graphics card.

Assuming the latest drivers did not fix the problem, the next thing I would like to check is your hardware temperatures.

Try to follow the directions while playing a game (Alt + Tab out of the game and then follow them).

Speccy
  • Download and run Speccy.
  • Click the Summary tab and wait for the information to load.
  • Follow the information here to publish a screenshot of the information.
  • Provide the URL of the screenshot given to you in your next post.

I've been on the Intel site trying to automatically find drivers and it hasn't done anything in like an hour? How can i find the right intel driver and install it?

Edit: downloaded the intel driver, so back to the first problem of the NVIDIA not working as well

All the games I have i checked them, and i passed all of them, but when i go to play them the same stuff happens...

Your temperatures look OK, so that isn't the reason.

Let's see if we can solve your driver issue.

The error says that you must install an Intel driver first, my guess is this deals with your chipset. Let's see if there are any issues shown in Device Manager.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Device Manager
  • Press and hold the Windows button + R on your keyboard.
  • In the Run box type DEVMGMT.MSC and hit Enter.
  • Click the + next to Sound, video and game controllers so it expands, showing all installed hardware.
  • Take a screenshot of this window and attach the file in your next post.
  • Alternatively, list all hardware here along with indication of any exclamation points or question marks next to the entries.

There are three likely causes to the original posted problem

1. Is that updates to 8.1 likely also include driver updates from Microsoft and that is NOT a good idea as they do NOT always get it right
2. You are using third party programs which purport to enhance the computers performance - Windows 8 and 8.1 do NOT like them and sometimes problems only become apparent after a given update to Windows - it is impossible to identify which one
3. You have some program installed which itself offers drivers updates and those are most certainly NOT a good idea

In respect of the latter problem re installing the Nvidia driver the likely cause is this
I just swept all the drivers off my laptop a few minutes ago, and re downloaded the NVIDIA
In addition to what my colleague has asked for may I ask you to supply the make and full model details of the laptop

That processor the i73630QM has Intel graphics HD4000
http://ark.intel.com/products/71459/Intel-Core-i7-3630QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_40-GHz

You want this driver
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24329&lang=eng&ProdId=3712

which is the Intel HD4000 graphics driver for the 3rd generation Intel processor you have.

Not really getting what your trying to say? You listed problems and just said they were bad, but no real solutions to any of them?

Please read the post and supply the info requested

Also I have now completed the post and offered you the correct Intel driver

When you reply do not click quote there is no advantage in quoting back to me ALL I have said please just click reply
Good luck with it - I will leave it with you
Edit: downloaded the intel driver, so back to the first problem of the NVIDIA not working as well

Ouch, get hurt that easily? Was just trying to show you that i already got the driver so there was no need to keep putting them in your post and telling me to look at it...

And what I wasn't understanding on your original post was the three issues you stated. And that's all you did was just stated them...
Hi Tater1994,

Sorry, I forgot to say list all panes.

Device Manager
  • Press and hold the Windows button + R on your keyboard.
  • In the Run box type DEVMGMT.MSC and hit Enter.
  • Click the + next to All Panes so they expand, showing all installed hardware.

Yes, but I need you to expand the "categories" to show the contents in each.

What you did with Sound, video and game controllers, but for all of them.
Nothing there is showing anything wrong either.

What is the make and model of this computer?

-------------------------------------

EDIT: I am just seeing these:

That is the driver I was expecting to see a problem with in Device Manager.

Please confirm that you have downloaded what Macboatmaster linked to and installed it.

If so, are you still getting this error:
