I have no sound on my "inherited" Gateway desktop. It came without the hard drive (smart choice for the former owner). When I installed XP Pro, everything works but the sound. The comp shows the driver for the sound is missing, but doesn't say what sound card. Speakers and original cd's came with it, but I don't want to fix it that way because I'd have to install ME to do it.

You can try using the Gateway Support site http://support.gateway.com/support/default.asp# to obtain the drivers for your chipset if the sound is onboard/integrated.

Thank you so much for answering my post! (I'm really stumped on this one.)

I already went to the Gateway website, and it didn't help. This was a special ordered computer originally; this comp has a Microstar motherboard and that's not what Gateway put on this model series as standard. That's why I included the Belarc report, so maybe someone else could pinpoint the correct sound card, etc. I apologise for not being more clear at the beginning.

Do you know if sound is onboard or not? Have you tried using Everest Home Edition to identify a driver download link?

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice. I can see now exactly what stumped me, and no, I wouldn't have been able to do it by myself. Thanks especially for the link to the MSI website for the specific drivers I needed;it worked perfectly. And I also formatted "d" to NTFS. :up:
