Ive been having severe problems with my computer. In the past ive experienced problems with reinstalling windows. The error message was "windows could not upgrade the file from 1% to 2%".It seems my computer has problems with updating windows or reinstalling windows and its happened more than once. Now its back to haunt me. Recently, I tried updating windows internet explorer from version 5 to version 6 and the message "windows could not upgrade the file from 1% to 2%" came back! This time it has seriously damaged my computer. Right now i cant access many things, not even the control panel. I keep getting the error message "An error has occured in this dialog. Error 29". It seems to be a problem with internet explorer but im not positive. Also system restore does not work. I cant really do anything, not even run internet explorer. Right now im on opera browser. You guys have helped my cousin tremendously in the past and i'd greatly appreciate it if you could help me. Thanks, Ryan.

P.S. I have windows ME (i like 98 better), 1400 amd duron processor and 128 mb of RAM.

oh and also if this problem can be fixed with the windows uprade error message i would like to know how to reinstall windows 98 over me. ME is such a horrible program.

Also even if i defrag my comp i get errors my whole computers a mess. Can you help plz?

The best way to install Win 98 over Win ME is to format and do a clean install of 98.

While I agree ME is a bit temperamental, it is possible to live with it! The problems you are experiencing are probably fixable without reformatting your hard drive. Suggest you stick with it a while and see what the Tech Guys can come up with, and only reformat and install 98 as a last resort. Your choice, but that is what I would do.

Lets have a look at a scan log since some or most of the problems are with either windows or internet explorer and It may give a way to go in diagnosis.

Download 'Hijack This! http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the " scan " button will change into a " save log " button.
Press that, save the log , load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

oh and also brushmaster this may be a stupid question but how would u format and do a clean install and stuff. I just dont want to mess it up more than it is. Last time i tried to install 98, i got the error "windows could not upgrade the file from 1% to 2%"

Thats clean and you should fresh install 98 as that over top install if you could pull it off wouldn'r run to god anyway.

For all its faults, when its running properly Win M.E. can be a very good system.
I think its file system is different to Win98/98se, so if you want to return to 98
then it will mean wiping the drive (or partition) in order to install Win 98/98se.

I have to agree John. I have it running on a system here and it runs flawlessly and haven't had one single bit of trouble with it..Perhaps it gets unstable depending on the software installed in it..

ANY version of Windows with no other software installed will be stable and dependable. Windows' greatest strength (the ability to run uncounted applications) is also its greatest weakness. Win 98 does seem to be a bit more dependable than Win ME, but dependability is relative. A clean ME system will be more stable than a cluttered 98 system...
