Hi there! I would like to seek some advise on a problem I am encountering with my display driver. Intermittently, the display driver will suddenly have an error and will cause the display settings to change to the lowest res 640 x 480. And sometimes will cause the PC to hang. In both case, the PC will need to be rebooted. I can't see any pattern as it does not happen regularly and not always on the same application that I am using. My PC is abt 2+ yrs old and this only started happening a couple of months ago. I tried to re-install the display driver (default installed by Windows XP) and still happens. Also tried to use the latest driver for my graphics card from NVIDIA website but the problem still happens.

This is the error message:
"The nv4-disp display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality."

Here is my 2+yr old PC specs:
Acer Pentium 4, 2.4ghz, 768MB ram
XP home, SP2
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX-440 graphics card, 64MB (set to 32 bit, 1024 x 768)
LCD monitor

From Windows website, this card is in the windows hardware compatibility list, so i think it should not be a problem. Is there anything else I need to check? Or could it be that my graphics card is already spoiled? But i also did the graphics card tests (3d), i think from the nvidia software, and all have passed the test.

It has a possibility of a video hardware fault in the card itself.

Look in the Event Viewer to check that it is not another corrupt application writing erroneously to the video memory though, just check to see if any clues are given.

The event viewer mostly shows type 'information'. An 'error' log i see there is:
"Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.05730.11, faulting module flash9.ocx, version 9.0.16.0, fault address 0x00001ec2."
But i think this is because i still continued to try opening IE, even after the nv4-disp error message was shown and the screen res was set to the lowest res. When i do this, IE then fails with and closes.

Other 'error' logs shown in event viewer, but i dont know what happened when these error were logged:
"Unloading the performance counter strings for service ASP.NET (ASP.NET) failed. The Error code is the first DWORD in Data section."
"Unable to read the performance counter strings of the 009 language ID. The Win32 status returned by the call is the first DWORD in Data section."
"Unloading the performance counter strings for service ASP.NET_1.1.4322 (ASP.NET_1.1.4322) failed. The Error code is the first DWORD in Data section."

Here is a 'warning' log:
"Windows saved user MASTER100\The Boss registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."

I am not really sure how to check these logs. Pls help.
Is there also a way to check video card hardware fault?

This is the "error" log in the event viewer (system) just before the "nv4_disp" error message was shown in the screen:

"The driver nv4_disp for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates."

Everytime i boot, the PC hangs during setting up of Windows desktop. And then reboots by itself with the chkdsk. Only on the 2nd boot will my PC continue to work... frustrated... then it will hang at unknown times......

Would a hijackthis log help to check this? If cannot fix, i guess i would have to dump my graphics card. Pls advise. Thanks.
