I am a solo guy - a consultant working out of my home. My IT needs are Office 365 and my Surface Pro - not much else. A previous employer allowed me to use his IT provider to house my email and provide security protection. It is time to move away from the employer and it doesn't seem necessary to pay an IT firm for such limited needs, particularly with so many robust security tools available to me?
Only you can answer this. If you think you can maintain the same level of security maintenance as the IT provider, then go for it. It's about your level of risk tolerance.
Dependant on the nature of your business and where you carry it on, you also will need to be sure that your arrangements for storing your clients/customers data (assuming you do hold such material on your system) comply with any minimum legal requirements.
