I recently bought the Seagate Goflex Home 1TB, but I'm not happy with the software and would like to change it.

Regrettably, I bought the Goflex without reading any reviews beforehand. I figured that Seagate make good drives, so the NAS solution would be good too. After setting it up, I find that it really isn't what I want. I want a NAS solution for data back-ups, but I don't want to have to install the Seagate bloatware on any of my machines before I can access the drive. I was hoping for an IP-address accessible network drive that I could map as a normal Windows network drive. After reading the reviews, I found similar comments from other users.

Does anyone know if it's impossible to change the software? I understand that the software is on the docking station, not the HDD itself.

I was hoping that it might be possible to PXE boot the drive, and install a lightweight F/OSS OS. All the OS has to do is manage the network traffic, SATA drivers, and be able to run TrueCrypt.

Any ideas?
