Mysterious HDD problem

Hi everyone,

I have been using a friend's laptop HDD connected to my intel dg 41 desktop motherboard. That was the only HDD connected to the computer and was working fine. A few days ago the friend asked for his HDD and I bought a new desktop HDD.

Here after the mystery begins.. I plugged the newly bought HDD to the PC and it didn't get detected. I changed cables, ports and the result was same. I got really frustrated, but then I remembered I have another 'laptop HDD' in my locker. I connected it to the PC so I can find out whether the motherboard or the new HDD is faulty. You know what, the laptop HDD worked fine! So before heading back to the place I bought my new HDD, I connected it again for one last time. Surprise! The HDD got detected! and I have been using it till now without any issue.

Is there any explanation for this case?

thank you!

First thought would be a loose cable (data or power).
There are too many variables here to nail down any one of them. By detected, do you mean visible in Disk Management? When you install a new HDD you have to allocate it a drive letter, etc.
