MyPal "update"

2454 Views 16 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  billmcct
I have been using MyPal for some great time now. At least in computer years!
XP, 8, 8.1 and even 10.

I find there are newer versions of MyPal released, and my XP machine (this one) could do with an update.
Everything I find is a full install, as in, wipe out all add-ons, bookmarks and such.
Just seems a tad odd that a seamless update is not apparent.
Some of my add-ons I had to fight to get to load, and I'm getting to old to do that again.

Anybody have any words of wisdom on loading a MyPal update into a 64-bit XP box?

Well, for one, MyPal is no longer based on Pale Moons UXP code. It is now based on Firefox 68 code. I would assume this means that you will no longer be able to install legacy extensions only web extensions. feodor had a big falling out with the Pale Moon developers.

I knew about the falling out. I had my own issues with PaleMoon and deleted all instances of it. Did NOT know they now used FF. I found the big issue with MyPal was the inability to load extensions. Maye they fixed that now.
I have 29.3 on this laptop, I can do what I need with it.
Interestingly, this load was not that long ago (29.3), probably two months. The "about MyPal" tab tells me it is "based on PaleMoon". The MyPal website (no dates anywhere) says still based on PaleMoon, and latest version is 29.3, Right on the (undated) website: "Mypal is based on code from Moonchild Productions' Pale Moon browser, which itself was based on code from Mozilla Firefox. "
So to "update" my 28.something on the XP-64 box needs a full re-load? I can do that...save my bookmarks.
I am a bit confused...I hate undated websites....but is there another website for MyPal that gives later versions?
Somewhere I read there was a way to save add-ons and re-load, but not sure the process to do so.

On GitHub I found this:
" I am developing mypal upon the firefox quantum 68-78, recently i have finished studying mozilla rust language and found that it is no problem to use rust to build for winxp. "
But that is dated (!) as a "readme", but no specific date on author's post.
Apparently this new version is called MyPal68.
Found the data. It's only 5 days old....no wonder I hadn't seen it!
https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsxp/comments/txpk6p Interesting comments on the PaleMoon development team. I remember asking a question there once and some yay-who jumped down my throat for using obsolete software.
I do know, as I have been told, we are far safer using XP with a decent AV than 10 with the best AV, as the bad guys don't care. Too busy trying to hack into 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 to bother with XP.
What's it been, 9 years since the last XP exploit was written?
It appears I can load MyPal68 and still have MyPal 28.4 running to transfer over and test functionality.
Loaded MP68, imported bookmarks, old MP still there.
Works quite well, and does not have the Chrome style rounded tabs which I hate. Sorta like 59 chevy taillights on a t-bird.
Once my feeble brain remembers how to put a quick launch on the taskbar, I'm set.
The person jumping down your throat was most likely Matt Tobin. He has since been banned and is no longer a Pale Moon developer. As stated though, you will only be able to use web extensions with MP 68. I was also banned from the PM forums for calling Tobin a fat *** a$$hole. However since he was banned for sabotaging the websites and the project in general, I was for "some reason" un-banned. Go figure.
I've been using the MyPal 29.3.0 browser when testing Windows Vista SP2/Server 2008 SP2 64-bit.
Thanks for the updated information and URL links.
I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Flavalee: Can't blow your photo up enough to read your cap or vest.
'nam era here.

I started with FireFox early on. We were so happy....those guys were intent on collapsing IE and the gross stupidity it encompassed. They have gotten to the point they embrace the MS and google BS to track everything and to block you from eliminating that. PaleMoon did similar with removing the actually useful add-ons. Hence my search for alternatives.
Tried Baidu, Kmeleon, Spark, Opera, URBrowser....none worked for me.
The only real issue I am having with MP68 so far is UBlock won't open....partial blank window....same with Ghostery.
They'll probably fix it soon.
Had to fully uninstall 28.4, as MP68 did NOT show up in taskbar, NOR did it show up in Task Manager as an application. Once I did that and dragged the icon for MP68 into the taskbar, it all worked.

What folks don't realize is the big push by MicroSlime to "give" 10 away was to enable their tracking and data theft. They seem to have convinced FireFox, google, who knows what else, to declare war on older OS that do not have the innate capability to allow them to track.

You want to see how bad it is, find a machine with 10, turn off all the trackin, telemetry and updates....and it doesn't.
Updates while you have killed one bit, does nothing for Orchestrator nor sidhelper, and one or two more.
Try the built in firewall.....turn stuff off.....and find it turns it back on.
Then find Glasswire. Cost you forty bucks. And be amazed. Every time you open something the OS talks to th mothership. You get an immediate alert, block it, and that function does it no more.

Open a Word document in your owned program. Talks to MS.
Open a photo program, talks to MS.
I have dozens of things blocked.
That's after two weeks of making sure teletry was killed and updates was killed (requires Group Policy Editor....which in my case, MS disabled once I started killing things until I loaded Glasswire).

Why did FF need to eliminate support for XP? How hard is this, since MP68 uses their own code to allow us to use it? This clearly shows FF had the capability, but chose not to.

Then you have the web developers, almost script kiddies, who specifically write to block older browsers and OS.
All stuff they learned in Junior College from professors who swallowed the Kool-Aid.

Try Home Despot sometime with XP and FF52ESR.

I downloaded version 68.12.0.8130 from the GitHub site and extracted its contents and saved it.
It appears to be a portable version, and I'm not sure if it's 32-bit or 64-bit.
I'll give it a try after I break out and set up my test computer in the next few days.

Here it a larger view of my ball cap.

If it has a "MyPalPortable.exe" file in the root folder and a "mypal.exe" file somewhere further down the tree, then yes it is a portable. That's assuming he's not using firefox.exe. It's almost certainly 32bit since it's the first release.
Welcome home, Soldier! I spent some time at SFO and saw the Berkeley Idiots spitting on returning vets.
I know a Marine (well, met him) who cleaned several clocks who did that.

Yes, 32 bit. I don't have any idea what "portable" means. Seen the term, have to look it up.

I have never seen that file structure in any portables I have used. Look in "browser and defaults folders" to see if there is a profile folder if so it is portable. I would assume though that the fact all the api-dlls are included that it is indeed a portable.

Welcome home, Soldier! I spent some time at SFO and saw the Berkeley Idiots spitting on returning vets.
I had an 18-hour flight from a military hospital in Japan to a military hospital in the U.S. which involved 3 fuel stops, and we never encountered demonstrators.

I heard about how some of the returning Vietnam vets were greeted after their ship docked at San Francisco.

I guess only @feodor2 can answer that question. My Firefox Portable structure look like this:
Note the Profile folder.
