Sorry, I prematurely thought that an earlier problem had been cleared up. The problem has come back again today. I have traced it to CoolWebSearch. Ad-Aware traced it, but it keeps returning no matter how many times I delete it. I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot, CWShredder and Spysweeper, none of which have been able to remove it permanently.

If anyone can help, you can. Here is the latest log:

Please print these instructions and make sure that ALL IE & OE instances are closed when fixing this.

So far this has been a very difficult one to fix , please try this

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

Now go to the c:\windows\system32 folder & please do this: right click on a blank place and select arrange icons by, tick show in groups and created, then look for the emhj.dll and see what date it was created and see if any other files were create that same day/time.
then please do the same and instead of created date, use the modified date and see if any other files were modified at the same time as emhj.dll

then any that were copy them and send to me at [email protected]

Sorry to ask you to do all these complicated things but this iosa new form of the hijacker and we are still trying to track down all the ways it infects and it's proving difficult to remove
Then
Delete these files

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ozp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\swebdvdm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\emhj.dll

and Delete these folders

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe

then
Reboot normally & post anew hjt log to check

Ok, I did what you requested but there were 2 problems. I could not delete the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [swebdvdm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\swebdvdm.exe

This is because it did not appear on HijackThis in safe mode.

I deleted the others you mentioned in the registry.

Also, after I ran HijackThis, I could not find emhj.dll in the system32 folder even though I followed your instructions to the letter.

I obviously could not delete C:\WINDOWS\System32\swebdvdm.exe either.

Upon entering the PC in normal mode again the problem 'appeared' to be resolved. However, when I ran ad-aware again it still told me I had CoolWeb.

My Hijack This log is now as follows.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [et1n] C:\WINDOWS\System32\et1n.exe
has replaced the O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [swebdvdm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\swebdvdm.exe
I think it will keep changing it's name on everyboot so please try this

boot into safe mode & run Hijackthis

look down the hjt log and the O4 entry that I have marked in arrows, it will probably change it's name but will always be in the same place between the sunjava & MSN messenger entries

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_01\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [et1n] C:\WINDOWS\System32\et1n.exe<<<<<<<<<<
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background

fix that entry only and then press CTRL+ALT+DEL once to bring up task manager and right click the entry for taht file's name in the processes tab aand select stop process onthat entry, then delete it's corresponding file in C:\WINDOWS\System32

I'm sorry I can't be more precise but the file name will have changed before you next post.

hopefullyn that will kill it for good

post a new hjt log please afterwards
