Does anyone know why my optical mouse stops working? It stops very often and I have to reboot the machine to get it to work again. I am using XP Home

Is it a wired or wireless mouse?

Does it use the round color-coded PS/2 connection or a USB connection?

What brand and model is it?

If it has a HP logo on it, it's probably a Logitech or a Microsoft mouse. It should be marked on the bottom. If you also check mouse properties in the Device Manager, it'll tell you what the manufacturer is.

I dropped my microsoft mouse on the floor and it didn't work anymore. I bought the HP at Big Lots.I loaded the disc that came with my Microsoft mouse and it says Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse (IntelliPoint) in the devise manager. It worked fine for a couple of years, but now it stops very often for no reason.

I suggest then that you buy a new mouse if you've been using that one for 2 years and it has become problematic.

Make sure to uninstall the mouse software for the old mouse.
