Have you tried it with the battery out?

With the battery removed and the converter plugged in, laptop will not run.
That may be by design. Have you asked the question of HP?
How do you know it isn't the battery or the AC adapter? Is there any way you can test the adapter and battery with a multi-meter?

My HP zt1170 will not run without battery in place either, I think it may be the design. By the way my battery crapped out a long time ago, but it still has to be installed to run on AC.

The more important question is will it still run on Battery ONLY?
I remember several laptops that exhibited the same behavior, that's why I think he should check with HP.
Both the converter and battery have been checked with a multimeter and are within operating values. HP says its the pricey motherboard on this three year old laptop.

Well, do you want to buy a new pricey Mobo, or can you live with the battery installed while using AC power? At least you have a choice here!
I'm probably missing something, but why would you want to run the laptop on ac with battery removed? If the battery is out it won't be recharged, and if you're on ac it can't be weight-saving you're interested in. If the battery checks out with a multimeter, then as winbob said, does the laptop run with the battery in and no ac power?
I don't get it either, why does it matter so much to use a laptop without a battery?
