90% of my 5,000 mp3s are hiding/missing/corrupt...

I am not entirely sure when it happened, but the only time I can think of is when I tried to do the routine maintenance I try and keep up with. I keep all my mp3s on a partitioned drive incase the computer crashes, so I thought, my music will be untouched. Well, I defragmented the partition drive and about 15% into the defrag the program froze. I use FixIt Utilities 6 to keep my computer running smoothly. This has happened before but nothing was changed. I later went to burn some music and to my surprise 90% of all my music is gone from my well organized partition. Though, when I go into "My Computer" the partition drive is still "full" and seemingly untouched by drive space. I've tried doing a file search incase they were accidentally dragged into another folder but nothing was found. I've tried running defrag again hoping it will put everything back in place but it says not enough space was available -- although nearly 15 GB of space (30%) is free on the partition. I've tried doing a system restore with my FixIt Utilities program but nothing was changed on the partition -- from my understanding it only does a system restore on the other side of the partition where all the Windows components are.

So from what I can come of it... the computer just forgot where it put them. And sorry of a winded list of symptoms....

Can anyone PLEASE help?!?

Thank you!

My guess is that something in the partition table got messed up, and now windows can't 'find' the files.

Try THIS program. It will recover them easily enough...I just hope you have enough room to move them to. Read the simple help file to learn how to use it...it's very easy.
BTW, it WILL take a long time with that many files, so leave overnite etc. Also, install it to another partition (C: will be fine for this use).

Good luck!

Of course, you could always restore them from your backup. You do have backup, right?

is backup something the computer will do automatically? I have a bunch of system restore things that do weekly checkpoints. But when I restored them nothing was changed. How do I access my backup?

And the pcinspector didnt retrieve them as much as I tried. How do I do the CHKDSK /F ?
