Hey Gang,

I used to have an old copy of WinXP Home on my computer. Then I upgraded to XP PRo with sp2. Now my computer seems to be unusually slow. For example, the "Send To" menu can take up to 5-10 seconds top open. If I right-click the "new" menu It can take up to five seconds. Opening up something else that used to open quickly can take up to 30 seconds to load now.

I thought free space was a problem so I went from 5% free space with XP Home nothing else to 32% of free space by adding an external storage drive (with Sp2). It got a little better but no joy.

I'm thinking that SP2 may be the culprit here because people say don't install SP2 unless you need it. Is this true? Can it slow down my computer that much? Or is something else the culprit?

I've also defragged, scandisked and run a registry sweep. It got better but no joy.

thanks,
HULK

If you installed Pro over the top of Home, that may cause some issues . . but they are almost the same so it is usually safe. Have you cleaned spyware/trpjan/junkware?

Hi Gang,

Thanks for your responses. Yes I have cleaned it, first with Adaware SE, and then with Webroot Spysweeper.

Second, I have 512mb of PC 2700 DDR Ram. Also, I did install XP Pro over XP Home. What should I do now?

Thanks,
HULK!

I would back up the files and perform a clean install . .
I already have the files backed up. What's the best way to perform a clean install?

"Clean Install" Does that mean you want me to take out everything on my computer and start over again from scratch????

Sorry, I'll stick with what I already have. I'm liable to screw-up something more if I do that.

I thought there was an easier way to do it, like say a 'reinstall.'

thanks anyway.

Yes, A clean install includes deleting partitions and formating prior to installing . . You will loose all data and programs, so you will have to reinstall the applications.

In effect, you did a "repair install" when you installed Pro on top of Home.
