In september i bought my dream computer, a beast (see specs). Now, four months later, it is slowing down. It's not sluggish to the point of frustration, but it should be quicker for the money and effort i put into it. it is custom built, not dell or anything. maybe i have to many junk programs on it? or malware? i have AVG free, spybot search and destroy, adaware se, and recently spyware blaster, so i'm not sure that is the case. any help would be great, HJT report included :).

You need to eliminate most of what is in startup...Go: "Run, msconfig,ok,startup" and uncheck everything except for Avg, hit apply and reboot. I would also go into Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall Google Toolbar and Yahoo Toolbar......

Keep your harddrive clean by trying to keep at least 15% of the harddrive free and running defrag regularly. I see that as the easiest way to keep the performance up.

The performance of your system is going to degrade over time because of the programs and drivers that accumulate. The registry will grow, services started on bootup grow in number, and programs that execute at startup will all start to degrade performance or load time.

You can use "msconfig.exe" in Windows XP to tweak what executes at startup.

The task manager is very handy if you know what trends to look for. Pagefile usage shouldn't be taking up a significant portion of your available memory sitting idle at the desktop. If your PF usage is 450-500+ MBs in size at idle then its safe to say there are too many programs running in the background or a memory leak or malicious program at work.

A lot of those spyware scanners actually make things worse by bloating the system and taking up resources. The protection, meant to stop performance-inhibiting malware, ends up being a culprit itself. If all those virus/spyware programs you've installed are running in the background at startup, that could be slowing things down quite a bit.

What do you have for CPU/chipset/RAM, JesseE?

Another thing - Is this slowing down occuring in Windows specifically or in computer games or CAD/modeling/imaging programs?

His specs are listed. Quite a nice machine you have there Jesse. It's true you build up a lot of crap over time but even so your running plenty of RAM along with a super fast dual core proc. So even if you do have a few unneeded applications running in the background you should not see a significant hit in performance.

I guess i would like to know what exactly is slow? Boot time? Games?

Good advice has already been given regarding disabling programs that run at startup. You can also run through this guide: http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12 and disable unneeded services that run by default. There's a LOT of em. It takes time to go through but well worth it.
