I’m having audio problems with MSN Messenger 6.2 and 7beta. The audio cuts in and out and at the best of times, there's an annoying mechanical hum each time after I finish saying something. I bought a new desktop: AMD Athlon 2500, 256MB DDR, WinXP, ADSL connection. The internet line I’m using is shared with 3 computers, so I don’t know if that’s the problem. I use my headset at the internet café with clear audio and no problems. I’ve also used my headset at home here with other IM programs such as Skype with very clear audio. The only problems I have are with MSN and Windows Messenger. I tried my on board sound and now I purchased a C-Media CMI8738 full-duplex PCI sound card. The sound card just gives me new problems such as not even connecting to people on MSN. “The network or computer you’re trying to reach is experiencing a problem” and bad audio with all IM programs including Skype.

I have disabled my WinXP firewall and PC-Cillin firewall and tried MSN with no programs running at all, with no success. Please let me know asap if you can shed some light on my aggravating situation.

Hiya

Have you tried this:

In the Audio Tuning wizard, if you choose "Game Compatible Device" on the "Select devices for calling" screen and then click Next, you will get an error message that indicates that the audio device you are trying to use is half-duplex. This is probably not the case; instead, select another device.
You may experience problems with MSN Messenger audio and video conferencing if you are using MSN Messenger version 6.0 or earlier and you do not have a network card installed on your computer. To fix these problems, please upgrade to MSN Messenger v6.2.
If you are using Windows XP and you have an Intel network card, you may experience problems using the MSN Messenger audio feature. Some Intel network cards enable 802.1p wireless connection support by default, but don't provide a way to disable that support.
Turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler may fix this problem. To do this:

In Windows, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet Connection, and then click Network Connections.
Right-click the network or Internet connection that is currently enabled, and then click Properties.
Clear the QoS Packet Scheduler check box.
Restart your computer.
Sign in to MSN Messenger and try using the audio feature again.

Thanks for the reply. I have already disabled QoS and tried using the audio with MSN 6.2 and 7beta. Without breaking open my tower, under device manager it says my Network Adapter is "Via Compatible".

When you go to the Device Manager, if you click the + near the Network Adapter, it should say what the card is called. Just want to know if its an Intel card or something similar, so we can rule things out :)

Also, can we see whats running:

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.
