MSN mail and Outlook Express

A friend of mine recently had his system rebuilt from scratch (not by me). He was originally on Windows 98 and moved to Windows ME. He has an MSN email account (eg. [email protected]) and was using Outlook Expresss to access this, I believe via POP3.

On the new system we are totally unable to access email from OE (version 6), either using POP3 or by using HTML. we've done everything in help documents/knowledge base articles but all to no avail.

Pop3 gets stuck on the server login authentication screen and says...

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail (1)', Server:
'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Service Unavailable', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCCF0

Access online via HOTMAIL is OK.

The following Knowledge base articles have been consulted (plus many
others): 173952, 179950, 297790, 220852, 173439.

Mail servers used were pop3.email.msn.com and smtp.email.msn.com

MSN support have replied rather unhelpfully with...

"The MSN account in question is currently in an expired status. Generally, this occurs due to different reasons that cannot be conveyed through online methods."

and have said on the phone that this service has not been available for 4 years now however...

Mail can be sent to the account and accessed online and anyway it was all working fine just a month ago.

Can anyone shed any light on this matter?

Other people say the same.. MSN email can only be used via hotmail. pop3 mail doesn't seem to work in the uk

And the rather cryptic MSN message means that you are no longer using MSN as your dial up ISP, cos it has closed down in the UK so hard luck, we don't want to support you any more cos you aren't paying for it and uncle bill is down to his last 6 Billion and needs more

Also the error message means that you have more than one Hotmail/msn accounts set up in OE and OE will only support 1 hotmail/msn account.

I hazard a guess that if you delete the other hotmail account from OE you might stand a slight chance of connecting via OE, subject to my advice above

Thanks for that Derek, we'll look around this area. I didn't realise that only 1 hotmail a/c is allowed and there are indeed two (although one is a duplicate and is deactivted in Outlook Express).
Just found this answer for MSN and OE from another source. It appears to work

1. Start Outlook Express.
2. Click Tools/Accounts.
3. Click Add, and select Mail.
4. Enter your name as you want it to appear to users who receive your e-mail.
5. Select I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use and enter your
@msn.com e-mail address, then click Next.
6. Select HTTPMail as the service, then select Other as the provider.
7. Enter the following server address:
http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata
8. Click Next.
9. Enter your full e-mail address as the Account name, and your MSN password.
10. Click Next, then click Finish.
At this point, you will be prompted to download folder information. Click Yes to
continue, or Cancel. The first time you check e-mail, this information will be
downloaded along with your e-mail.

Regarss

I'll give this a try. Obviously it is much the same as many other previous attempts but the server address is different. Maybe that's the clue.

Ken.
