I would like to know why I can't uncheck programs from the Windows start program list when I go to MSCONFIG. It says I don't have the Administrator rights to do it (I'm the only administrator). I have to do it in Safe mode instead. It works then but the same error message appears. It used to work fine before. Do you know how to fixe that ?

I had this same problem a while back. In my case it was due to a corrupt user account. I had to create a new account and transfer files from the corrupt account to the new one.

After creating the new account, msconfig worked fine.

open a new user account and define it as admin. Make you adjustment from that user account

Now, I can change settings but I still get the same error message.

I'm not questionning your method of solving this problem but it seems to complicated and long to create a new user account and transfer files. There must have been an error of some sort in an installation or uninstallation process of some programs.

There has to be another simpler way to fixe this. Maybe a key in the registry, I don't know. If there is nothing else I can do, I will keep it that way. We don't play that very often.

It could be malware disabling your rights.

Can you do Start > Run > Regedit? Or do you get the same message?

My system is super clean I can assure you.

I'll try to explain the problem a little more.

When I type msconfig, everything works fine. Never said there was something wrong with msconfig.

In the window that opens from msconfig, there is a tab that tells you wich programs or applications will start when Windows starts.

There, I can click an item to either activate an application or deactivate it so it won't start when Windows opens.

After, when I click ok, I get an error message that I don't have the administrator rights to do so. Never had this problem before. In safe mode, I will still get the message but at least, everything works.

I've been getting the same message since I installed the latest updates and Windows defender.. BUT.. I can still check/uncheck things and even tho I get the message they remain checked/unchecked.. So far I've just been saying Ok and it lets me anyway.. will begin looking into it soon.. keep us posted if you find the answer.

Personally I suggest not using Msconfig for disabling startup programs. A very debatable subject, some says its okay and others say its not.
without going into detail on why I choose not and starting a war I just recommend using

manage your startup programs

Yeah, that debate is a long running one... but the issue here is why all of a sudden lots of us are getting that new message "you can't change things in MSCONFIG because you don't have administrator rights" (paraphrased of course)

It's possible that some type of malware has done some damage to it in the past, who knows. My system is clean now though.

I suspect also the restore feature in Windows XP. It's far from being perfect. 100 times better than my old Windows Me but still...

Then again, could be a lot of things...
