i am running win xp home. i went into msconfig and saw that selective startup was checked as well as the boxes below it. i had read that normal startup is normally checked. my pc seems to be starting up fairly quickly. should i leave it alone. i am the only user. thanks, franco

I would leave it ;) Have a look at what items are UNchecked, which may give you some clues to what is not being loaded and helping your PC to start up quickly

Generally speaking, msconfig is not the place where startup processes should be controlled. It is meant to be used for troubleshooting startup problems. Any programs, services, or processes that need to be disabled, should be turned off in their proper places and not in msconfig.

Normal startup is what you should have. Look through the config and see if you can determine what was disabled in this selective startup.

If there are things that you don't want loading at startup, shut off services in the services config window in Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services.

Other startups can be disabled in the registry or the Startup folder, but there are many apps with a friendly GUI that will help with that and put all the control in one place. For example:
