MS Office exe files won't terminate

When I exit an MS Office application and then go to task manager, I find that the application's exe file is still running even though the application is closed. To restart Outlook, I have to go to task manager, terminate Outlook.exe and then I can start Outlook again. Same issue with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Any ideas on why this is happening?
