Using Windows 2000 Pro and Office XP. All service packs have been applied. When you open excel it opens and you see the outter area of the excel program but where you should be seeing cells you can see whatever is behind it. In Task Manager when this happens it shows 2 instances of excel.exe running. When you close down all open excel document there is still one instance in the task manager. When you end process on it you can then open excel without issue. Any help with this would be appreciated as it has been an issue now with about a dozen systems here at work and so far for a final fix you must rebuild the pc but for now we are just using the end task as work around.

>> for a final fix you must rebuild the pc

 !!! I've no idea where you could have got this info.

A couple of things to check first:

Tools -- Options -- General. Make sure "Ignore other apps" is unchecked.

Check if anything (e.g. Book1) is listed as "Hidden", under Window menu (if nothing is hidden, the Unhide cmd will be greyed out).

Let us know how you get on.

EDIT: afterthought re: 2 instances -- wherever you're launching from, maybe it's configured to launch on singleclick & users are doubleclicking? Try rightclick & Open.

Sounds like you might have an excel.exe file in your XLStart folder?

Sounds like you might need to troubleshoot Excel. I'm going to write an article right now. I'll be back.

You can also try to re-register Excel by clicking START --> RUN and then typing Excel.Exe /regserver and then click OK.

P.S. - Make sure there is a space between the .Exe and the /
