Mouse not recognized on Chromebook after latest update?

The mouse on both my husbands and my Mothers Chromebooks stopped working yesterday. Don't think that can be a coincidence! I'm wondering if it is the latest update - they are both on 120.0.6099.259. I found that if I remove and reinsert the little USB thing you plug into the laptop, then it recognizes the mouse. Anyone else experiencing this? My Chromebook is on version 120.0.6099.235 and is working fine.

Original poster here - I'm sorry - should I have not posted my question here after posting it on another site?
No need for apologies.
It is OK to ask for help on more than one site, but often it leads to duplication of efforts to solve and therefore helpers on either one or both of the sites tend to risk wasting their time.

as indeed my colleague mentioned
To avoid duplicate efforts.
Thanks for understanding.
When you say
I found that if I remove and reinsert the little USB thing you plug into the laptop,
I presume it is a wireless/bluetooth mouse

I suggest you unpair and start afresh with a new pairing

It is a wireless mouse - not bluetooth.

I don't use my Chromebook daily. After reading this, I opened my Chromebook and checked the version of ChromeOS.
I was at 119.0.045.214 and I'm in the process of updating.
I use a wireless NOT bluetooth mouse; I know this because I have bluetooth turned off and the mouse is working.

I'll post back what version will be on my device and if I have a problem with the mouse.

I've now updated to 120.0.6099.235.
I had no problem with my mouse.

I wonder if the 259 version was pulled because I updated hours after you posted and got the same version you are running.

My confusion is that the version 120.0.6099.259 which is on my husbands and mothers Chromebooks indicates that it is the latest version and there isn't a newer version to update to. My Chromebook is version .235 - just like yours. Which is the latest version - .235 or .259. You'd think it would be .259 since it is a higher number but I don't know how these versions get numbered - if it's higher is it the latest?

They might not be in the stable channel!
Here's how to check

Note has 259 is not listed as of Friday January 26th, so it is probably a beta or dev version. Not what either of them should be running.

The OS version is definitely the stable channel

cros.tech/table/

for example
Lenovo Ideapad C330 Chromebook
board: hana • codename: maple
Stable
120.0.6099.259

============

What are the full details of the two chromebooks involved please

I suggest you see this, keep the link and monitor the thread
Yesterday (1/24) after receiving the update, my wireless keyboard and mouse stopped working. - Chromebook Community (google.com)
it may indeed prove to be a glitch in the update
As per the link - sleep settings and if that does not help - hard reset which of course unlike a powerwash will not delete all your data
I also suggest you consider filing a bug report with Google

I think from looking around online that it is an issue with the Logitech wireless mice and this update. How do I file a bug report with Google - could you give me the steps to do so? Also - if this is of interest - I purchased a Bluetooth Logitech mouse and that works fine. So - I think it is the Logitech Wireless Mice that have the problem.

updates on Chromebooks are as far as I know - similar to windows
You are only offered the update if the system is suitable for the update

Check the link I sent in post 11 for your husbands and yours exact chromebook model

Just an update on my situation. My husbands Chromebook remains on version 120.0.6099.259. Mine has updated to version .272. I bought a bluetooth mouse and that works on my husbands Chromebook. Daily I check to see if his version will "update" to a different version but it just says that it is up to date. Is there any way to force an update. Obviously there is a newer version available, but its like his Chromebook is "stuck" on .259. Any thoughts?

I never suggested it was because it was end of life - too old to receive updates

I have searched for you on the link I sent in my previous post 11
cros.tech/device/careena/
The codename of the HP is Careena

The current OS is
Chromebook 14-db0
board: grunt • codename: careena
Stable
120.0.6099.259
platform: 15662.80.0
Beta
121.0.6167.155
platform: 15699.54.0
Dev
122.0.6261.13
platform: 15753.10.0
Canary
123.0.6273.0
platform: 15766.0.0

I wish you the best of luck with it
My strong advice is to NOT try suggestions you may find for forcing an update

My apologies Macboatmaster - I didn't mean to imply that you had suggested the Chromebook was too old for updates. That was what I had been thinking might have been the problem but, as I mentioned, when I checked I could see that wasn't the case. With the information you provided it appears that this Chromebook does in fact have the latest update and I appreciate you providing that info. Hopefully in another few weeks a new update will come out. And again, my apologies and thank you for all your help.

I have a question about this sentence in your first post.
I found that if I remove and reinsert the little USB thing you plug into the laptop, then it recognizes the mouse.
Must you do this each time you turn on the chromebook?
If not, then the chromebook is functional with the older mouse and I would not worry about the installed version offered.
If so, then you mentioned a bluetooth mouse is working so again, I would not worry about what version is installed on it.

Yes, with the wireless mouse I had to remove the dongle each time and reinsert it into the laptop for it to recognize the mouse. With the bluetooth mouse - it's not an issue - it works everytime.

Then keep using the bluetooth mouse. When the chromebook gets an update, try the wifi mouse to see if it has been fixed.

Did you report the issue? Macboatmaster mentioned it in post #13. The best thing you can do is report the issue so google knows there is a problem on some devices with that release and perhaps take steps to correct it.
