Welcome to TSG

You got CSW

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

CWshredder from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/

Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/

then
Run CWSHREDDER,

Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.
and make sure you have all Microsoftsecurity updates

then reboot &

Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

then reboot &

Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then.........

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. .(Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Mjack,

What part of that log is evidence of CWS? Besides the Motor search stuff

O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\sstyle.css
O19 - User stylesheet: C:\WINDOWS\sstyle.css (HKLM)

Those above?

Thanks,

YES!..........and this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [system32.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system\systeminit.exe
But the "motorsearch" is a bit of a giveaway really.

CWS comes in lots of flavours, some of which do not even show in H/T logs.
Thats when the "nose" comes in handy.

Would really appreciate some help here coz I don't have enough hair to tear any more out!

I got the Motor Search Browser Hijack and followed all the suggestions above to the letter. At every reboot, Motor Search was still there, hijacking my browsers (both IE6 and Netscape6).

I repeated the whole process without rebooting and I've still got the same problem.

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Here's my HT logs:

#1 is how it looked after repeating the process
#2 is how it looked after rebooting
#3 is how it looks now after I removed the obvious motor-search items

Go here http://forums.techguy.org/t110854/s.html and run at least 2 of the on-line virus scanners.

Reboot:

Run HJT again check these if they still exist:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zsysdll32.dll] C:\WINDOWS\system\sysdll32.exe
O16 - DPF: {6B4788E2-BAE8-11D2-A1B4-00400512739B} (PWMediaSendControl Class) - http://216.249.24.142/code/PWActiveXImgCtl.CAB
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111123} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\bla.MHT!http://216.115.95.98//1ble.chm::/wincfgid.exe

Close all browser windows and applications before clicking "fix checked".

Reboot.

Reboot in safe mode, click here to see how,

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Locate and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system\zsysdll32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system\sysdll32.exe

Reboot and post another log and please don't cut off the top of the log.

Hi - thanks for replying: sorry it took me so long to repost.

I had actually reposted my original request and got top class assistance in resolving the Browser Hikjack issue which hasn't bothered me again.

However, I took the precaution of checking the current Hijack This log and found that one of the three items was still present (the O16 - DPF PWMediaSendControl Class) so I have now done everything you suggested as well.

I used the Panda and Housecall virus checkers: Housecall didn't find anything but the Panda did. However, it took so long to run that I had to leave it running overnight - when I looked in the morning, the screen had frozen so I never did find out what it had found. However, I ran the Panda again and it reported me all clear. As I didn't check the HJT log immediately and in the meantime I had used the web, I decided to run it again. Unfortunately, towards the end of the check, the screen blanked so yet again I don't know what or if it found anything. I mention all this in case it rings alarm bells for you but I proceeded on the assumption that I am free of viruses.

The new HJT log is below. Many thanks for your help.
