Today I bought an extra stick of 256MB PC3200 RAM, and installed it with no errors. System performance is up, but strangely enough it has caused my performance in Counter-Strike to decrease.
Specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton
512MB PC3200 DDR @ PC2700
nVidia GeForce4 MX440
300 Watt PSU
Windows XP Professional SP1

When I had 256MB RAM I could run CS at 60FPS constant, but now I'm getting 20-60FPS. I'm also getting problems with virtual memory and the paging file.

One thing I noted is that at one point my paging file usage was up at 500MB but I still had 300MB of RAM still available. I'm thinking it may be a problem with my virtual memory settings. What are the optimum settings for 512MB RAM?

Thanks.

It was the drivers, the framerate problem is solved. But still, I would like to know what the best virtual memory settings are for 512MB RAM.

Paging file usage is not the thing to be concerned with, it is the paging rate (that is, how much activity is there moving areas to/from ram).

With 300Mbs available, this rate should be next to zero.

So, I would think the problem must be elsewhere.

Hopefully, someone will step in with some suggestions as to how to improve your framerate.
