Monitor setting

Hello all
I have Win98SE on a 1999 sort of computer; no particular make. My problem is that the screen has "set itself" to small ie a low definition and when I reach 'setting' to re-adjust this the display just splinters into minute fragments of picture: the video card is a Matrox G100(AGP) PowerDesk. Any help would be appreciated.

That sounds like the video card malfunctioning. Is it still under warranty?

The process of elimination, however troublesome, will resolve this issue best for you. The easiest point to start at is to try a monitor you know works correctly. The other area to check is to try a video card you know works correctly. And that could be more of a problem if you don't feel comfortable working on the inside of the target computer.

If you take it to a 'proshop' to have the problem assessed, get all costs up front in writing before the work ever begins, know that it takes no more than 1/2 hour maximum for a technician to remove that video card and replace it with one that works correctly, plug the computer in and test it running. Ok? And it would only take a least expensive video card to replace that one you've got now unless you're doing some sort of video intensive work like video program editing for example. It doesn't have to be a Matrox for replacement.
A cursory on-line virus scan is in order just to rule that out.

Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com or http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm and click the Scan Now link to run a free on-line virus scan.
