Two systems
1. Win2K modem dial up NEVER QUITS

2.XP Home modem dial up ALWAYS QUITS
This eliminates the ISP unles it is sending me a "bullet" which only works on XP. Doubtful

My dial up connection in XP simply quits after an unspecified idle time or inactivity. I've changed the disconnect after idle to NEVER. I've googled this problem and found all the easy settings changes to keep the modem connected but it persists. All my checkboxes pertaining to redial, reconnect or disconnect are set to never or blank.

I can set my download manager to dribble a file and keep me connected, but that is a bother.

Anybody know of some obscure registry setting that will arbitrarily kill a modem connection? Any advanced setting checkbox I may have overlooked? Suggest a search string that may find results? Searching google on the following words;
disconnect
XP
dial up
modem
problem,
in various combinations gets me no joy. Can you suggest a techie term that may more aptly apply?

Thanks for help.

Happy New Year Bill and welcome to TSG. I assume you are using a local dialup service (ISP) and not AOL. Some ISP's have it setup that when no activity is detected across a node, it will disconnect. It may well be your ISP that is doing the disconecting. If you use AOL, then it is normal to be kicked off AOL. It may also be that your Win2k computer has something running in the backround that is pinging the ISP (or using the internet) from time to time that the XP computer doesn't have. This could be anything including a virus. I know that eTrust (CA's antivrius) by default checks for updates evey ten minutes which is nuts.

My ISP is suspect and I shall contact them but I think they are not the cause of this unless it is, as I say, an XP specific signal. It is a very generic nation-wide ISP (not AOL like it's the plague man). Both systems have very identical non auto scheduled generic anti-malware utils and I go thru every application carefully to negate its calling home for any reason. I do all my updates manually. I kill anything trying to telecom without my permission such as the old TKBell (realplayer) , etc. I'm betting there is something not widely published deep in the registry causing this.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Bill

One thing I would try is simply replacing the modem. They are inexpensive and it just may be the modem itself.

Replacing or substituting the Modem is worth a try. I just ordered a pair of serial hardware modems (pacificgeeks.com or geeks.com $6-$10 ea) for a Linux experiment, so I might try one on this. They tell me true hardware modems do not have burst rates over the flat maximum capability set by the hardware. A controllerless WinModem (nominal 56k) has greater range up to 115KBps for short periods. Something to consider. I'm in a rural area where usurious practices in DSL rates persist.

Best Wishes for the new year
