I installed a new hard drive in my computer and everything works except the modem and the colors are messed up. I have tried removing the modem and starting windows without it and restarting the computer with it...but still no modem. Any suggestions?

1) what operating system?

2) Try booting into safe mode, deleting all entries under modems and rebooting.

3) If its still not detected, then either its not properly seated, its defective, or you have a bad pci slot. Few exceptions to this rule but not many.

Sounds like you need the modem and display adapter drivers for the modem and colours to show up correctly. Do you know the name of your modem and video adapter? Would these names show up unders device manager on your old hard drive? What does device manager say about your modem and display adapter? If there is a yellow exclamation mark for either of these entries, or if your diplay adapter is listed as VGA, you are missing the driver software that makes the hardware work. Device manager will be found at start-settings-control panel-system, and then one of the tabs will say device manager.

Windows 98SE is the operating system, I have deleted all references to the modem and I know that the modem is good...I am using it right now. (I just put my old hard drive back in). So now what?

The modem is made by GVC and it is a 56K PCI voice modem and the display adapter is an Intel 82810E Graphics Controller. The device manager also has a seperaate icon with HCFMODEM and when I click on it, it says PCI modem numerator. This is on my old hard drive.

What did the new hard drive say under device manager? Were they missing? If so, you could download the appropriate drivers for the two devices, save them to disk (floppy if it fits, or burn to cd) and then install them on the new hard drive. Go to device manager, appropriate device, right-click, properties, reinstall driver, browse to driver file location. http://www.driverguide.com/ has searchable drivers, or go to vendor website
