I recently installed Windows Service Pack 1 from the Windows Update site onto a computer using an MSN dialup connection. After the installation, the dial up program could no longer dial up. The error message that immediately comes up indicates that it can't find my modem, which is internal and came with the computer. I've confirmed that the modem is working, and I've enabled all the connections on the computer, but I still don't get that lovely dial tone when I click connect. Any ideas?

Have you tried to create a new connection? Just create a new dialer as per your service provider's instructions or setup.

Also, if you go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modem Options - then Modem is the modem listed? Then click on Properties and Diagnostics. and Query Modem. You should get some info about the modem if that part is ok.

I did try that, and I received a different error message. I'll do that again and post it when I have the chance. Thanks for the second suggestion, I think they suggested that in the help section but I'll try that again, if I haven't already.

The modem is listed under phone and modems options, but when I tried to access the properties of my modem, it says that "The modem properties cannot be displayed because the modem is not available."

I also looked at my MSN internet settings and noticed that its set to connect through broadband, which i don't have on that computer. When I tried to change it to dial, it said "No modems detected, please instal a modem before continuing." I confirmed that my modem was still installed in the 'phone and modem options' menu discussed above.

In addition, when I looked at the network connections, there were 3, named Local Area Connection 2 (WAN network driver), 1394 Connection (1934 net adapter, and Local Area Connection. I think the first one was the one I used to use to connect via dial, and I had never seen the second until today.

anyway, when i tried to set up a new connection it wouldn't let me select the ones that use a dial up modem. Suprised :) ? Any help would be greatly apprectiated...thank you!

I would try going into device manager and remove the one that shouldn't be there then I would try to reinstall the proper drivers that came with the modem then reboot or click scan for hardware changes in device manager and hopefully then windows will find it. Softmodems can be funny animals to install . If it did install it would not be list under a wan . If all else fails try system restore if it is enabled .
