hi there ;), hows it going?

was down having a look at a friends computer, xp pro sp2, connected via ethernet -cable modem.

no internet connection, there is a physical connection and ive done the usual troubleshooting procedures

went into cmd and done ipconfig/all

his ip address started with a 192 address as did the default gateway etc.....DHCP is on

blinking 'ready' light on the modem itself, but noting lighting up on the 'send', 'receive' lights on the modem.

im with the same provider and my 'ready' light is on constant.

has he been cut off?? hes adament that it is on

where is this 192 ip address comming from?

ive also tried running the installation cd that came with the modem, it cannot find the NTL network and kicks back an error 800

thanks guys

robert.

Does the cable modem have an LED for CABLE? Off the top of my head, I would say either his cable modem is bad (depending on the meaning of the READY light for his specific cable modem) or his cable is not active! Not active as in either not turned on or the provider has an issue with his connection.

What cable modem does he have? Manufacturer & Model please.

His "modem" is really a modem/router. Please give us the make/model, and we can be more specific. ;)

its an NTL cable modem, model no is: e08c007

2 ports on the back, you can connect to the comp by using the ethernet or usb port.

also, you cannot connect another device to the free port so as far as im aware this should not act as a router.

1 cable modem for 1 device.

Apparently you have an intelligent bridge and for the most part you can't configure anything but apparently you can access the contents by typing in 192.168.100.1 and entering root for the username and the password.

While I'm sure you've done the standard stuff let me just suggest some steps and if you've done them just ignore them. The first step in figuring out something like this is to turn off everything including the computer and the cable modem and anything in between. Then you wait 30 seconds and turn it on again. Wait until the connected or sync light becomes solid, if it doesn't become solid you need not go any further. Give your ISP a call and get them to fix the problem. However, just to make sure you should take a look at all your filters and perhaps make sure nobody is using the phone while you're performing this test. If the light becomes solid then make sure your computer is connected properly and turn your computer on and see if it gets the proper information with the ipconfig /all, however, just to make sure the information isn't there just because the lease didn't expire yet you want to type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew to see if your computer gets new information or no information at all. If you get the proper information (you should have an IP address that isn't 0 or start with 169, subnet mask, and default gateway) you try pinging (ping "ipaddress") the address entered in the default gateway area. If that's successful then you want to try pinging the external address but since you don't know that just try pinging google.ca. If that doesn't work you need to login to the modem and take a look around to see if you find anything fishy.
Keep us updated. :)

thanks for the reply ;), it is not an ADSL modem, it is a cable so no phone involved

i think it is down to the cable ISP, the blinking 'ready' light on his stays on constant on my modem.

the ipconfig/release and renew steps have been performed.

now if it was working he should be getting something similar to my own

I think that's your best bet is to talk to that person's ISP.
Also, your ipconfig is different from the information on the internet for the NTL 250 modem. I don't understand why you would access the configuration page at 192.168.100.1 if it didn't perform some kind of NAT. Someone even suggested that all ports were forwarded to the address the computer got but I don't have any personal experience with that particular modem. I might make sure that you and your friend have the same modem.
Let us know if that person ends up getting another modem.
