This computer is nearly 5 years old and it's worked great up until about 3 months ago. I finally ran scan disk and fixed the errors, but somehow, I've lost my cd-rom drive completely. It's still there, duh, but the computer doesn't recognize it at all. It doesn't show up in my computer and I can't open it through start->run. It won't let me do anything at all with it, as if it has never existed. Any ideas?

If the drive is in good running order (is working right) …
1) The IDE cable could be unplugged/loose from the board or drive
2) It’s not getting power i.e. the power cbl is loose or disconnected

Can you open/close the drive? If so check you IDE connections. Plug-n-play should see it if all is well. If you can safely rule those out then the drive just might be shot. BE CAREFUL WITH the older connections to your motherboard with the IDE cbl if you unplug it and put I on backwards you system will sit there. If not don’t worry about it since the newer systems and connectors so you can’t get it wrong.
