I am running Windows XP on a Sony and have a wireless router. My desktop PC which connects by ethernet into the router is having problems. I have two laptops which are fine. I have even connected one of the laptops by ethernet into the router, to make sure that it was not a problem with it, and it could connect to everything fine.

What happens is that misc webpages will not load. They timeout, usually with the error message "Page cannot be displayed…cannot find server or dns error". Some of the websites include 1) hotmail 2) yahoo->inbox link 3) certain buttons on itunes and apple 4) certain buttons on bellsouth's webpage. Also I can no longer access windows update; when I try to find out what updates are available it gives the error code "0x80072EE2".

I have tried the following in this order:
1) Ran through the troubleshooting on the windows web site, which included shutting off firewalls (Norton and Windows), flushing dns, adding windows update to trusted sites list, and checking the hosts file. Same problem
2) Compared internet settings of desktop to the XP laptop, and are the same. (Also tried running with Netscape and same error occurs)
3) Installed and ran Spybot. Found three, removed. Same problem
4) Installed and ran Adware. Found two, removed. Same problem
5) Got frustrated, and since I have only had the computer a year with not much on it, I used the Sony recovery to (supposedly) set the drive back to it's original configuration.

Now I have a computer that still will not access the internet correctly, and I am going to have to reinstall all of my software.

Please help. I am at work right now, but I will try all suggestions when I get home at 5.

Ok. Followed some other threads and did the following:
1) Scanned online with symantic
2) Scanned online with Panda
3) Ran updated Adware
4) Ran updated Spybot (had to use update to get rid of DSO exploit, but its gone now).
5) Ran HijackThis and below is the log...

BTW, I still have the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! I am really stuck!

Is it the SAME web pages that won't load? Or hit and miss? I'm leaning towards thinking the NIC card itself may be the problem.

Hi Candy, Thanks so much for helping!

I actually had the same idea about the ethernet card (once I reloaded, I couldn't imagine what else it would be).

I installed a new card, but couldn't take the other one out, because it is actually on the motherboard. I connected the cable to the new card and the same thing happens.

It's always the same pages and links: WindowsUpdates, hotmail, yahoo, itunes. I think there are a couple of others, but I am not sure. Yet I can hit techguy pages and google and surf a lot of others just fine.

Sounds like it could be a security setting then. Have you tried turning off Norton?

EDIT, DUH, I knew I couldn't read today, I see you tried that, but am wondering if per chance you missed anything.......

Is the date on your computer correct, per chance?

Hi Candy,

Sorry, I was just able to get to my computer tonight. I looked and set everything to "off" in Norton, but I am not sure if there is another way to stop it without uninstalling it. Also, is there a way to find out if there are any other firewalls installed? The only one I know of is Norton, but nowadays everyone has there own and installs them without telling you. (I'm wondering if Sony or Bellsouth DSL has installed one without telling me). That's why I don't have SP2 right now. I'm trying to get this to work without it.

BTW, the date is correct 1/13/05.

I will recheck the security settings in IE, but since it also happens in Netscape, I don't think that's it. Are there any other security settings anywhere in XP?

I am having this same problem on my Dell running Win XP, My compaq running Win2000, and my wireless connected Mac running whatever. This has got to be either a new bug, or something. I, too, have tried all the different Anti-virus products, including the beta Microsoft Anti-virus, which did pick up something tha others did not. But, I still can not logon to E-bay, Open Hotmail, read Yahoo mail. It's odd, I can get to the yahoo mail list, open the inbox, but not open the mails. We need an expert!

I just tried accessing everything in safe mode and it still doesn't work...very disappointing.

In safe mode I re-ran spybot and adware. Then I redid HijackThis, I don't know if will help.

Log file from safe mode, but I think it might be clean. My newbie concern is the no name file that looks like its running.

Being a relative novie to the HJT Files, I , too, would choose to "fix" the above two listed BHO's. Other than these two, everything else seems okay. Maybe someone else will see something different. I'm still wrestling with my system. I'm going to Sophos to see if I can download their cleaner. I'll let you know if I get anywhere. Oh, I did try SpyFerret which found instances of Bonzi Buddy, and intersysinc. in my registry keys. But, I had to remove them manually, and it didn't make a difference. Back to the drawing board.

Here's my thread, trying to solve similar problem.

Problem solved! It was my DI-514, D-Link Router. All three computers were running through it. I unplugged the router, logged on to the Internet with IE, and was able to successfully logon and read my Ebay, Yahoo, and Hotmail. Maybe this will help someone else!
