I am wanting to help my mom. She can never remember to save her documents using Word (thats all she will be comfortable with) in rich text format or in .doc. The program first choice in the "save as" menu is .wps which is unreadable to many she has to submit documents to and also takes up much more space. Is there any way I can change the defaults or just make the .rtf the first choice in her choices of saving files?
thanks bunches in advance

Hi pentacle.

I have Works 5 (2000), you don't say which version mom has. I thought Word came with some versions of Works (2000 & later?)? ; maybe that's just "Works Suite".

Anyway, there is a File -- Save As -- Template option, which suggests you can then "use this template for (all) new WP documents". This works for some aspects (e.g. default font, default font size, etc.), but seems not to for default file format.

Also, I can't find (a) any additional toolbar buttons to add, let alone any relevant ones (b) this subject covered on the net.

(It's not an answer as such, but) maybe you could download & have a go with OpenOffice instead (http://www.openoffice.org/). Its word processor component ("Writer") has an option to save all wp docs in Word format.

Sorry I can't help more,
Andy

I will try your suggestion. i really think it was a sorta stupid question because i don't think there would be anything you could do legally. but i cannot dl that other program for her - she hates that she has to go thru microsoft works on her program menu and doesn't think that word is the same programs as microsoft works word processor. so i put a shortcut on her desktop for her, reminding her it would slow down the computer. if she cannot remember to choose the correct format when she is saving something - she won't be learning a new programs altogether - or well she wouldn't agree to it.
anyways thanx a lot. i will do that while i am still in arkansas

Noted on both counts. The only other thing I can suggest is WordPad. It's a lot more basic than Word so no extra learning would be required. On the down side she might lose some features (e.g. Headers & Footers), however the default save format is .rtf which Word should handle with ease.

Rgds,
Andy
