I found many people having problems with MS updates and they seem to all be in this forum. Hope I'm in the right place.
In the past I have had no problems installing MS updates. I have it set to notify but not to download/install automatically. (I have changed the settings to no avail.)
When MS new installer (v3.1) became one of the updates, it failed to install. I have tried repeatedly and it always fails to install with the following messages: "access denied" and then that it was "partially installed and might not work correctly." I always do as it says and reboot to undo what was done.
I have tried installing it manually. I have gone to SoftwarePatch.com and tried to install from there.
I cannot download any updates/patches until I install the Installer. The icon stays in the task bar and it is always about the installer. (I turned off update service until I can resolve this. It was annoying me!) This has gone on for weeks. Both Secunia Software Inspector and Belarc Advisor tell me that I am missing some 50+ updates.
Microsoft told me to go to Dell. Dell is clueless. Went to Dell Forums, no help there. When I Googled "MS updates/installer fail"...there are pages of people with same problem. None of them have a fix that I can find. MS Community forums: same problem listed several times but no fix there either. I understand that MS had to quit using the version before this because of so many bugs. That is why the new installer is "available" now.
Problems seemed to start after I installed IE7 (which was included in updates but I installed it manually) so I uninstalled it and use IE6 when not using FF.

Question: I have found that Media Center Edition of XP has some issues. There have been a few problems that happened because of this particular version of XP. Have managed to work them out in the past. Do you think that this has something to do with it being MCE?

I tried Dial A Fix. What a nifty little tool that is! Anyway, I did the things it suggested but still have the installer problem. I also have problems with several dlls. I am considering reformatting my computer. I have a brand new 160G hard drive to back everything up on so it won't be a disaster. There are a bunch of little things wrong, nothing major. But, all those little things can really add up to one big annoyance. So, unless anyone else has any ideas, I guess that's it for now.
If anyone does have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks for your help.
