Hi everyone.

I am having difficulty getting my headset to work correctly and I can't figure out what exactly the problem is. I am running WINXP Prof ver 2002.

My keyboard is a HP and plugs into both the microphone and speaker jacks in the rear of my computer, and has two jacks at the back of the keyboard for the Mic and Headset. When my computer speakers are plugged into the keyboard headset jack, they work fine.

When my headset is plugged in though, the sound comes out of one ear only and is very faint, despite me playing with volume controls and the computer software volume controls. This is a brand new headset, I replaced the old one because I had the same problem and thought it was the headset. Also, for some reason with this headset, when I plug the mic into the keyboard jack, then the speakers into the headphone jack, my voice comes out the speakers and it does that stupid screeching thing. This never happened with my old headset so I'm not sure how to tackle it.

I have an HP running XP Home but I think its just about the same when it comes to audio

Have you tried settings on the contrl panel ??
Sounds & Audio Devices, plug your head set in, click the advance tab under speaker setting, Advanced should show a pic of stero headphones, check performance tab, etc.

Also on the control panel the should be an icon for Multi-Channel Audio or something to that affect. You should be able to test the configuration.

Hi.

Thanks for the input. I've tried absolutely everything, but nothing changes. I think it may be the software I'm running for my sound card...? If that's a possibility I'll have to try and find out exactly what it is and find the correct drivers for it. I don't think the speakers work properly either (volume wise).

Don't be confused, HP have done that on some models since Windows 95.

A good feature too.

I would suspect that something is amiss in the design/connection of the headset compared to the standard audio 3.5mm stereo socket?

However consider that the speakers are likely "amplified" (and separately powered) but the headset is passive, dependent on an amplifier somewhere?
The keyboard socket will probably be "line out" level, not speaker or headphone power audio.

Hi. Yes I reckon the speakers are amplified, but even when I plug the headset into the rear of the computer there is no difference in sound from either the speakers or the headset. It's just very strange and I'm thinking its software related but I'm not sure where else I can change the settings unless I try to completely reinstall my sound card... Ugh....

Dunno if this helps at all, but it seems to be an inbuilt soundcard into my motherboard. Not sure how to figure out what drivers are best for it.....

I think you might go to device manager and delete the sound card, then reboot and windows XP will reinstall the hardware and drivers.

Make sure your headset does not have a button for mute. If it does make sure it's not on.
