I have windows 98SE and kept getting messages telling me that I was short of memory. I had 128 MB.Today a friend installed another 512Mb( 2 256MBchips SDRAM PC100)and when I switch on the computer tells me that I have 640MB, which is what I would expect but....I am still getting the low resources messagewhen all I am doing is trying to get on the Internet and am not knowingly running anything else other than the Norton Antivirus and the zone alarm firewall. I have also cut down the programmes on startup. When I tried to shut down I had to do it on the computer as there wasn't enough memory for the start button to work. Please what is going on here Help!

The low resources will probably not be helped with the page file either.

Usually its associated with spyware or adware (or virus activity) running on the computer, or some older poorly written software.

Resource limitations plague all Windows 9x and ME versions, there are a finite number of "heaps" that get assigned. If an application finishes but fails to correctly return the resource, you run out. Also if too many applications are running. (Thats where spyware etc come in, you are unaware that they are running)

Your resources issue is essentially due to too many apps starting at boot time. All of the 04 entries are ones that you should review, using the links above, and then use MSCONFIG to turn them off.

You have a bunch of apps related to your scanner. (TEXTBR~1.0, Stimon), some related to your printer, your mouse, your monitor. All of these appear as icons at the bottom of the screen. If you don't use them frequently, I would unselect them, and then run them as needed.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that Windows 98 sometimes doesn't play happy with more than 512 megs of ram......

With more than 512 installed, I "think" the errors should be "Out of Memory" as opposed to "Low on System Resources".

Adding the MaxFileCache line won't hurt though.

yes it is "out of memory" but when I click on properties performance it says low on resources I did add the Maxfile cache line.Do you really think that removing some of the memory will make things run better?
