I met eleven new people this morning, all in the comfort of my apartment. You might be interested in how I did it. I discovered this morning that I could not connect to the internet, either with my MSN, Juno or NetZero. So I called MSN phone support. About four hours later, I met my eleventh MSN support tech, the one who had me remove and reinstall Dial Up Networking, which is why I am connected now. We had a great time, with one tech rearranging different settings and the next one putting them back like they were, one tech advising that all I had to do was upgrade to the latest MSN version, the next few saying the Version 5.2, which a prior tech had gotten me to download to replace 5.4, and later techs saying no, that wasn't the problem. One tech saying problem was with the settings in one place, other techs voting for other places, all to no avail. A common parting comment was "I assure you that will take care of your problem" or words to that effect. I got some really good typing practice; I must have installed Dial Up Connections and tried to connect via various one maybe twenty times. One tech, a supervisor, was nice enough to replace my coveted password, which turned out to be unnecessary and unhelpful. I tried to appeal to a higher court, and found out there isn't any. The ninth tech said that my tenth call, if I had to make it, would connect me to a second level tech; the tenth tech said she never heard of such a thing. I've concluded that the Fifth Commandment was not meant to apply to MSN techs. I'm going to present the evidence to the Supreme Court--I'm sure it will agree tht MSN is a monopoly, that it has unduly monopolizied my time and energy. Frankly, it was almost as bad as trying to get the phone company to correct one of its mistakes. grandpaw

HeHe, nightmare ehhh.

I have to admit I have had some tech support that I ranked superb. Those instances are hard to forget, because they generally are rare. Tech support people going out of their normal mode to evaluate and correct a problem.

We had a mess at one time with cable access, the whole network was down here for anyone with multiple ip's. Days of calling and trying to connect. One young lady took it apon herself to call me and have me try the latest hocus pocus to try and get access back. I had not asked to be called, she just called us up, we administered the hocus pocus, and like magic everything was back to normal.

But my latest go around with the cable company was back to normal. Do this, try it. Didn't work, call back again. over and over.

I had an "honest" tech support person on the phone today at work. I use the UPS World Ship program on my work computer to do our shiping and I had a problem downloading todays shipments to UPS. After the Tech person had tried only two things to solve the problem, she asked me to hold while she got someone else on the line because she said she was a little new to tech support and didn't want to mess things up. I have found that it is not often that you run across someone in tech support that asks for help.

I thought I had awakened from the nightmare, but apparently I went back to sleep and there is was, waiting for me. Again, I con't connect through MSN, so I am connected now via NetZero. The twelvth tech I talked to has referred me to what she called Problem Resolution, which is supposed to call me back within 24 hours. I am wondering now if the new terrorist laws might apply. If I make it through this in one piece, I plan to apply for the merit badge in patience. grandpaw

Well, having hardley ever rung the Tech people up, thanks to this place, I have had a few strange calls.

The first was when I got my first computer, about 3 years ago. I was in the " I don't need it, delete it" phase. I decided I didn't need the icons for AOL, and deleted them. So, my network connection was gone.
Rung the Techies up and they tried for about 10 minutes. This is at a pound a minute.
Then they said something which I was forever grateful. Well, my bank balence maybe. They rang ME back. It lasted an entire hour! Do the maths on how much he saved me.

The second time I rang my ISP saying I kept getting kicked off. I said was it due to port 139 being closed. They said whats that?
So I explained. I said it was for DOS attacks. Whats that?

Well, after 20 minutes (freephone) I had told this guy all about trojans, network security, etc. I thought I had the problem :confused:

Well, there you go. Met a few new friends that way. The first cost the second free.

I plead not guilty to all charges. I had three connections in DialUpNetworking, one for Netzero, one for MSN and My Connection. At one point, none of the three would connect. Later, NetZero would, but not MSN. I did get an MSN connection later, but then after I still couldn't. Because of that and other problems, I finally today reinstalled Windows and things seem to be working fine so far. Thanks for your note, my Acapulco Candy Bar. grandpaw
