Media Player launches without being requested. (XP, SP2, WMP10)
Exit out of it, and it launches again by itself immediately.
Happens so fast and so often, I suspect that it is a virus, somehow tied to mouse movement. Just touch the mouse in the background, and up it comes.
It has rendered the system unusable.

I have tried to remove it (windows components), yet it is still launching.
(It's not in the startup menu.)

Anyone seen this? Recommend a particular flavor of malicious code scanner or utility?
(Tried clamwin, hijackthis & ewido, no luck.)

first...make sure you don't have a cd or dvd in one of the optical drives...
try booting in safe mode...if the problem remains...go to the add/remove section in the control panel and on the left side ...in the ..add or remove windows components..uncheck windows media player...let it do its thing..

Next time it does this Control + Alt + Delete -> Applications Tab -> Left Click - > Click End Task -> Processes Tab -> wmplayer.exe -> Left Click -> End task..

Try that. It might also be worth posting a HiJackThis Log in the security section.

Turns out the user had reinstalled iTunes.
Uninstalled iTunes. (Hard to do when it keeps launching itself...)
Uninstalled WMP11 (yes, 11.)
It tried to do a "rollback".
Uninstalled WMP10.
Uninstalled iPod.
Restarted.
Ran Windows Updates.
(It installed an XP Security Update, and WMP10 Security Update.)
Said no thanks to IE7.

Rebooted, and now nothing pops up that I don't want.
Not sure if I fixed the problem, or just treated the symptoms.
But thanks for your help, anyway.

avoid IE 7 and WMP 11...be careful with your updates...they will try to update to the "new" versions
