I've recently bought a new computer, upgraded pretty much everything except the hard drives, DVD drive and graphics card. Because of that I had to reinstall Windows, but ever since I've been experiencing serious, and puzzling, problems with media files. mp3 files will play part of the song and then skip to the next, this happens in iTunes, winamp and media player. AVI files will play the first few minutes, sometimes only seconds, of the video before stopping as if it was the end of the file. These same files all worked fine on my old system. I've tried installing codecs, I've tried installing all the Windows updates and even done complete virus and spyware scans but nothing has worked at all. I'm completely out of ideas so any input would be greatly appreciated and may even save the computer from being thrown out of a window.

Windows XP
Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
2.99 GHz, 512MB of RAM
Radeon 9200 VIVO
ATI sound built into motherboard (Soltek small case)
