After my son deleted some registry keys without understanding the consequences, I decided to reformat my hard drive, reinstall WinME and start fresh. After finishing the install, from the HP supplied system restore discs (I was not supplied complete ME program discs) and reloading my virus, firewall, HJT and spyware programs everything was working fine (I thought).

When I went to use my camera (Vivicam 3715) I could not get the camera to communicate with my system to download. This camera does not require any software to be installed, it operates as a removable drive device thru the USB connection. When I click on "My Computer" it does not recognize the device as it usually did.

I have checked that plug & play is enabled in Windows, and support for p&p is enabled in BIOS, everything OK there.

I tried to install the device thru the "Add New Hardware" function and when I do it tells me that the driver for the device is missing. When I do an automatic search for the driver it finds one in Windows, but when I try to install it I get a text box that says it could not find this needed file and that I need to insert my ME program disc:

USBNTMAP.SYS

I tried searching the hard drive, also the HP recovery discs and the camera's software for W98 and could not find it anywhere. Upon further search I found this in the hard drive:

C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\usbntmap.sys

When I try to specify the location to install from I get the same error message as above (with the file name in uppercase). It will not install from that location.

Could the problem be that it doesn't recognize the file because it is not in uppercase letters? Is it possible I could download the file in need somewhere online? I've tried everything I can think of and could really use some help here. Thanks in advance!

p.s. If it would help I could post screen shots of the text boxes that come up. I should also add that I have only one other USB device, a scanner, and it is operating correctly.

It's not case sensitive so it wouldn't matter if it's in upper or lower case.

Usually the software CD should have a setup file for the camera so it will work on the machine.

Here is a link for the drivers for your camera. Note that there are 2 models of your camera and you will need to look at the serial number of the camera to determine if it's 3715A or 3715B. The first letter of the serial number indicates the model number. (A12H3456B is model A; B12H3456B is model B.)

Thanks for the info on the links, but it looks like it's going to be one of those days...........

My camera is a 3715D which they don't even rcognize on the website. As I said, and the Vivitar site agrees, both listed versions of this camera do not require drivers unless you are using W98. The only software on the camera's install disc is for W98 USB mass storage. The only other things on the install disc are the owners manual and some photo editing software.

The camera worked fine for several months before I did the recovery and I never installed any kind of drivers or software. I'm thinking that the fact it is a camera is irrelevent, I believe the problem would exist with any kind of external USB storage device, but that's just my opinion, no way to be sure.

have performed the recovery process without removing the external
devices like webcam, printer, scanner etc. To resolve this issue, I
strongly recommend you perform recovery process again.

NOTE: Make certain that all internal and external peripherals
(such as a printer, a scanner, or a tape drive) are
disconnected from the back of your computer when performing
a recovery.

I knew it was going to be one of those days. Somehow I doubt that this will help, but I'm going to try it again.

Exact same situation as before. Everything works fine except this removeable drive (camera).

Still looking for the same file. Just for giggles I extracted the file from the folder C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\BASE2\USBNTMAP.SYS to a disc in my cd drive and tried to install it from there when the driver install requested it and it still showed that it could not find even though I specified the correct file path, M:\usbntmap.sys

Also tried to paste it into the folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ which was where the driver install was going to put it and still the same results. If I found someone with a ME install disc could I have them send the file to me?

Can anyone tell me what the driver file is for USB mass storage in ME? Knowing this should help be determine if I'm even looking in the right place.

I found the missing files that "Add New Hardware" is asking for on driverguide.com and downloaded them to my cd drive, but it still wont recognize then when I try to put the correct file path to them.

Is it possible that these files are protected and windows will not allow them to be taken from any source other than the original Windows ME install cd?

usually the setup knows which cab file you need. Worse case scenario, you will need to look at each .cab file on the CD (Options > Cabs folder), unless you know which .CAB file you need.

I do find it strange that it would not load again...

What doesn't make sense is that I used the restore discs at least twice before I bought the camera. When I bought the camera in Dec. of 03, it worked fine right out of the box. Only after the last time I reformatted and recovered did I have this problem.

Anyone have any idea why Windows wont accept these files from anything other than the Windows CD? I've used files from driverguide before and had no problems.

I guess if no one has any more input, I'll have to get some professional help. If someone could give answers to the unresolved questions I've posted about the files being protected it might be a help.

Have you tried uninstalling the device (USB Mass Storage) and letting Windows installing it again.

Actually I think the USB Mass Storage device should be on the CD for the camera, as my CD-Writer had USB MAss Storage device installed too..

There is nothing listed in the remove/install programs for USB mass storage. The only time it shows up is in hardware profiles and My Computer when there is actually a mass storage device connected. (Shows in My Computer as a "removeable drive", and "mass storage" in hdwe. profile)

I tried installing the USB mass storage driver from the cameras disc but that had no effect. It stated it was required ONLY for W98. It has always worked properly without any additional driver installed, and the manual confirms no driver is required.

I'm thinking the problem might be with the driver for the USB root hub but Windows wont reinstall it as long as there is one in the system now. I don't see any way to delete the one that is in place now, it only gives me the option to extract it or copy it, but not delete it.
