A larger hard drive would also be in order. Seeing as it has a 6GB hard drive it probably wouldn't support XP either. Best suggestion, get a newer laptop.

Have your sister do the following to regain some hard drive space:

1. Move the slider in the Recycle Bin from its default value of 10% to 2% or 3%.

2. Disable the System Restore feature. It's not very reliable in Windows ME and it allocates itself a lot of hard drive space.

3. Go into the "Tools - Internet Options" screen in Internet Explorer and change the amount of space for temporary internet files to 20 MB.

4. Go into "Search - Files And Folders" and delete everything that appears when you type in:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\*.*

C:\TEMP\*.*

~*.*

_*.*

*.OLD

*.BAK

*.CHK

MSCREATE.DIR

(Note: Make sure to type them in exactly as you see them listed. They have to be done one at a time. Not all computers have a C:\TEMP folder, so don't freak out if you get an error message when you type in C:\TEMP\*.*)

5. Empty the Recycle Bin, then restart the computer.

Tell her to run scandisk.

Both Flavallee and Bandit have made excellent suggestions. I slightly disagree concerning system restore though. System restore can be a valuable asset for your sister if she encounters further problems down the road. However system restore does consume much space and should be scaled back. Also system restore could contain faulty restore dates within the stores which will render system restore useless. I would follow Flavallee's suggestion and disabling system restore, restarting system to flush old restore points but then re-enabling system restore for future use. Bandits suggestion of running scandisk is also an excellent point since she could have defective areas on the hard drive and Explorer could be reporting free space incorrectly. After doing all the clean up Flavallee suggested and running scandisk I would also suggest running a complete defragmentation on "C" drive. This will help condense her file used space.
If the problem condition of wrong free space still exists after the above then she may have to save her personal information and reload system to correct problem. Doing a Fdisk /MBR would also be advisable if she has to resort to reloading OS.

Hope that helps
Dave

Instead of disabling System Restore, you can change the default amount of space that it uses. I believe it's set to 12% of the hard drive space. Since that hard drive is 6 GB, that equates to over 700 MB of hard drive space. Scale it back to about half that amount. Doing this won't create as many restore points, but there's really no need to have several of them.
