Hi, my computer has crashed again. Windows Me. Each time it has a problem reading data on c drive. Have run Norton disc doctor once and it found bad sectors. Crashed again, unable to read c drive again, can't read data. It all seems to point to hard disc. Ran disc doctor again and now it has found more bad sectors. It has also taken 18 hours and still hasn't finished. What causes bad sectors, I reload windows and it keeps coming back. Would formatting disc first help and how do I do it. The machine just came with an oem restore pack (floppy and cd) which I just insert, push a button and it does the rest. How do I use fdisk is this is the way forward. Is my hard drive broke, the computer is less than a year old.
Please ANYONE

If your DiskDoctor program found bad sectors it's time to get a different HDD.

Bad sectors are caused by the media failing (the actual disk surface).

Me explaining how fdisk and format work is irrelevant. Just get a new HDD, be sure it's not too big that your motherboard won't 'see' it. Check with the computer maker's tech support by email to see how big of a drive is compatible with thast motherboard first, OK?

You already tried to re-install with your ERestore disks, thast your diskdoctor alerts each time is what tells you the disk is bad, try that with a good HDD and the other orginal equipment installed (except memopry and HDD don't count). If even one sector is bad, time to backup your sensitive data and install a new drive. Sorry you had difficulties. Sounds like your 'puter is otherwise Ok.

Yes you HDD is broke, check to see if it's under warrantee, you would surely have a warrantee claim if it's under a year, CALL QUICK if so!
