I have a Maxtor 5000 LE 80gb external hard drive using a USB
interface that I use for storing backup copys of my system. I
would like to be able to use this as a second hard drive when
I am surfing the net or downloading new programs. Is it possible to have my system set up in a way that it would ask me which
drive I would like to access to gain access to my stored programs
and stay in that drive until I request a switch back to my main
drive, which is slowly filling up. I hope I have made my request
clear and look forward to receiving whatever input I get, thanks.

You should be able to that without any problem. Whenever you install a program you are usually given an option of what drive you want to install to; just select the new drive.

Same goes for downloading files, on the Save To screen just select the drive letter corresponding the the external drive and save it there. You can create folders by using My Computer on the drive.
