maximum ram it can handle

With Windows 98 SE is there a limit to the amount of ram you can use with it? I have 512 SDRAM but when I try to put in another 512 which my motherboard says it will handle, I get a windows protection error message.

This question pops up from time to time...It seems that 98 has trouble with more than 512MB's of RAM
