HP Pavilion 761n, 1.67 GHz, 512 mb, XP Home Edition

This crazy machine freezes to the point of no return at random. Sometimes, but not always, the screen will have a green strip and the rest of it rust color at freeze time, but usually the screen remains intact.

Get this: When you push the power button on the front of the machine it will go into a loop cycle from blue HP logo screen to selecting which type of Safe mode to use, back and forth. The only way the machine will start correctly is by flipping the surge protector button off and wait for the green light on the power supply to turn off. Then you flip it back on and use the power button on the front of the machine.

Another thing: I set up DSL for the client and it was working fine. When the machine froze, and got it powered up, the DSL modem works fine, but the computer will not access the Internet.

Are these symptoms the power supply? Could it be the CPU? Could it be the USB pulling down the power supply? I ask this because when the HP all-in-one USB printer was power on, the system seemed to freeze a bit more. How can I determine the problem? I used AIDA32 to check the system, all the fans were running on the inside and it indicated no problems. Help!

Even the best of us can overlook the simple things at times so here are a few questions for you.

Are you using a firewall or antivirus program?
Have you gotten any error messages?
Have you checked the Device Manager for any yellow !'s?
Have you tried booting to "last known good configuration"?
Have you tried System Restore?
Have you checked msconfig/startup to disable programs not necessary at startup?

I use the firewall that is part of XP and AVG antivirus. It scanned clean.

There has not been any error messages and the Device Manager is without !'s.

I have not done the last known config, but the machine has done a complete restore. I wll have to check the startup of basic msconfig this evening. I still need help!
