Sorry about the new thread on an 'old' topic. I only found one reference to this error, on a thread that ended in 2003. On XP start-up, getting the error message:

windows cannot find c\windows\system32tools\lostrun.exe

Startup is slow afterwards. A recommendation was to use regedit, Windows... CurrentInstallation, RunOnce. - the reference is there to "LostRun.exe".

I took the reference out of the RunOnce directory (using regedit) as recommended - but on the 2nd Reboot, the error message is there again, and that Reg entry is BACK in the RunOnce folder.
Any idea which program on Startup - or Shutdown - is replacing this line in the RunOnce folder??

I've run StartupList 1.52 here - copied the results:
(By the way - Lexpps and other "Lex" entries are there - is this from Lexmark printer? I've uninstalled the printer and drivers long ago - and would like to delete anything related to it if not harmful.)
