Lost Partition

I have a problem with a disappearing partition on my hard drive. On my
Compaq Presario there was a partition on the hard drive (4.2GB) that was
used for saving a backup of the hard drive. The program used was
Power Quest Drive Image which was factory pre-installed. There is also
a restore disk to do a full restore of the system as it came from the factory.
I had to do a full restore which went okay but the backup to the partition
was incomplete and the files looked badly corrupted. I could not remove
those files so I formatted the partition. I got rid of the files but the process
created the drive letter, (E:); which was the original and an extra drive (F:)
which did not exist before. I cannot access either one as the following
message comes up: “E:\is not accessable. A device attached to the system is not functioning.” Both drives are empty. I do not need to recover the files as they
were corrupted anyway. I just want to find a way to get back the partition [E:].
Could someone give me instructions how I could recover the partition without
damaging any files on the main partition of the hard drive.

My computer is:
Compaq Presario 5827
500 mhz processor
256mb RAM
17GB hard drive #1
6GB hard drive #2

Question # 1: What operating system are you running?
-Assumeably, you are running either Win98se or WinME. If you had Win2k, you could actually do it from within Windows.

Question # 2: Have you tried Fdisk yet?
-This is a little bit more indepth than most people are willing to do, but...let's walk you through it:

Make a boot disk:

START -> RUN

Type in "command"

Press ENTER
Now, you are in DOS. So, change directories to the c:\windows\command folder
In here, pop in your floppy disk in drive A, and do this:
format a: /s (i think the switch is /s for system)
It will ask you if there is a blank disk or whatever...follow along.
When it is finished, you then would need to copy some additional files:

copy format.exe a:
copy fdisk.exe a:

This should be it for the disk part.
NEXT, boot to the floppy (stick it in and reboot the computer)
When you get to the Command Prompt (it should bring you there automatically...if it doesn't, start tapping the F8 key when you see the COMPAQ logo during the POST, and then choose Command Prompt Only.
You should be to a c:\ prompt
From here, just type in Fdisk

The first thing you will see is a Msg that asks you if you want to enable Large Disk Support. Just press "Y" and ENTER.
Now, you should be in the fdisk utility.
From here, you can do a variety of things...(and pardon me b/c I am doing all of this from memory)....
The list will have an entry to Display partitions and logical disk drives (option 4, I think)...so, go into that.

You should see your main disk drive as the C: which should be a PRI DOS partition. This is good. Don't mess with this. However, look at the other partitions. Compaq has a tendency to add in a EXT DOS partition with no drive letter, and a LOGICAL DOS drive with the drive letter of "D" (which is different on your system as you pointed out, i think).
To get rid of that, you will want to press the ESC, go back to the main menu and then go through the process of deleting the logical dos drive (options 3 and 3 or something like that). You then should be able to then CREATE an LOGICAL DOS DRIVE (options 1 and 3, i think)...this will now be the former "System Save" drive that Compaq put on the system.

DON'T MESS WITH THE PRIMARY DOS PARTITION, as this is your main drive.

You will then ESC out of everything. You are now back to the Command Prompt. You may need to reboot, otherwise, you could be able to just type in:
format d:
It will prompt you...just make sure you have the right drive letter in there and do it.
Good luck

Note: This is all from memory, and it should work. But, be wary about doing it until you have read up on Fdisk from Microsoft or another Tech Support area.
