Lost data after installing an inferior version of Windows

I am in a bit of a panic!!!!

Be warned, I am not a techie in the slightest, and I'm certain I've committed many rookie mistakes which have lead to this most unfortunate event, so please bare with me...

I have this habit (which I have now been told is a very stupid one) of setting my laptop to sleep rather than shut it down when I'm away at work during the day. Yesterday morning, in a daze, I shut down my laptop and when I tried to restart it, the power would flick on, the Windows 10 icon would show up but then the screen would go black shortly thereafter. Basically, the power would remain on, but the software/operating system wouldn't load.

I frantically turned to trusty google, and followed all the usual bits of advice, such as draining the power supply, removing the battery and removing external drives etc, but still no luck. I then called on the help of my housemate who advised me to reinstall Windows. I had previously been using Windows 10, but the only disk I had available for reinstallation was Windows 7. After being reassured by my housemate that no data would be lost despite installing an inferior version of Windows, I decided to give it a go.

....and now, all my data is lost!!!

I appreciate that I am a complete idiot for neglecting to store my files on the cloud or google drive, but I am really desperate for any data recovery solution to what is currently being treated as a tremendously terrible tragedy! I have loads of my literary works, an unfinished memoir, sentimental videos and photos, and study assignments stored on my laptop, and the thought of losing it all makes me want to wail like a banshee, pull my hair out and vomit all at the same time!

Please help.... :(

If that data wasn't backed up or on a different partition, and you formatted the hard drive, that data is gone, unfortunately. You could probably get some of it back from a forensic data recovery site, but that will cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.

Here is an option, but I offer it with a WARNING: freeware can be helpful, but make sure your antivirus and antimalware is on and up to date. Better safe than sorry. https://www.powerdatarecovery.com/recover-files-after-reinstall-windows.html How to Recover Data After Windows Reinstallation is where you want to read. Read everything through before you do anything.

When you say 'partition' what does that mean? When I reinstalled windows it required an upgrade than gave me an option of different drives to install the software. The primary drive was too full (I am hoping with my data) to reinstall windows, so I did it on another drive - I believe it was labelled 'default', but cannot remember exactly. Oh dear, what a mess up I've made :'(
I've edited your post for language, please remember this is a family forum.

If you had your hard drive divided into partitions, and stored your data on a different partition from the one you had your OS on, the data would be fine. If you didn't use partitions (and it doesn't sound like you did, truth told) it is probably gone. You can try Lanctus' advice, but follow his instructions closely.

thanks,

v

Everyone started out somewhere. No worries. Here is information on partitions. https://www.howtogeek.com/184659/beginner-geek-hard-disk-partitions-explained/

This sounds like you either installed it on another drive or partition. Do you know for sure?

Please follow the instructions in the link below and upload a screen shot of the disk management screen to give us a better idea of what you have.
