I have a Compaq Presario R3000T, three years old and out of
warranty. The pin in the power jack is loose, and it is extremely
difficult to get the computer to recognize the ac power is plugged in,
even on a flat surface. This happened before, and I got the pin re-
soldered. It ran smoothly for a month before the problem returned.

What should I do now? Get it re-soldered? I don't want to get into super-pricey replacement parts, but it's a good laptop (when it's on) and I'd like to keep it functional.

I'd get the jack replaced, re-soldering a broken pin isn't likely to be very strong.

If it's on been a month then hopefully then can give you a break on the cost.

But whatever you do, do not use it until you have it fixed.

Permanent damage (non-repairable) is the outcome, as the loose connection can dissapate a LOT of heat and destroy the motherboard.

See my many postings of one of the two machines I got in that owners failed to follow that advice. Nice picture. :D
